he History of the Eleven Human Kingdoms
1200 BA - Recorded human history begins essentially in 1200 BA. Details come mostly from epic heroic verse first written down at that time. At this date the other 5 races (note the Zo weren't around yet) were pretty much where they are now, and there was much less intermingling. The earliest human kingdoms of which we have records are Ren'tlic, Fosner, and The Far Isles.
1200 - 900 BA - Over this periods, often called the Dark Times because of the lack of written records and the turbulent nature of life then, an additional 8 human kingdoms appeared. The eleven human kingdoms were essentially the same as the current eleven human protectorates under the Ascendancy. In the north, on NordIsland, was the kingdom of Nordfell. In the north-east of Shan Deral were the kingdoms of Fosner, Liranth, Brimoa, and Kiramu. In the areas around the current capital were the kingdoms of Khorobit and Sul, while in the south (from west to east) were the kingdoms of Keril, Rosyaye, Ren'tlic and The Far Isles.

By 890 BA

  • All eleven human kingdoms established now.
  • Continual skirmishing with the Dwarfs in the south-west mountains
  • Relatively peaceful relations with the Halflings and Thoom
  • Continual skirmishing with the Fen'neko in the north-west valleys.
  • Continual fighting between the human kingdoms.

735 BA - Construction of the fortress Mountain's Reach, by King Helm Lavrastuys of Keril.

665 BA - Appearance of a strong king of Ren'tlic, Balmord the Red, with ambitions to unify all the human kingdoms and conquer the other races. Construction of the city Hyrios, still the second largest city on the Western Continent. Thus began The First Unification War.

662 BA - Ren'tlic allied with The Far Isles (another of the old kingdoms), and the Thoom were squeezed and conquered quickly. The Sylvans in Myrkilshin were left alone at first as Balmord concentrated his attention on the southern human kingdoms.

655 BA - Ren'tlic conquers the southern human kingdoms, Keril, Rosyaye and Khorobit. Balmord the Red is crowned in Hyrios as the first High King.

652 BA - Balmord invades the Fen valleys but is repulsed with heavy losses. The frontier of the High King's territories is established at the river ??

650 BA - Balmord turns back to the south and invades the Dwarven territories in the south-west mountains. His objective was to gain control of the vast mineral wealth of that area, but he was defeated and slain at the siege of Makchatun. Balmord's empire disintegrated after his death. The Thoom regained a nominal independence, but, being between two of the human kingdoms, they never regained their old power, and remained essentially a client kingdom of Ren'tlic.

400 - 350 BA - A population explosion in the Far Isles leads to waves of emigration, taking the form mostly of piratical raids upon the other kingdoms. Coastal areas all over the Western Continent are damaged to one degree or another. However, the emergence of a king, Forthar McFearson (often called Forthar the Fat, but not to his face), strong enough to unify the Far Isles under his sole rule led to a systematic plan of territorial expansion and conquest.

349 BA - Beginning of The Second Unification War. The Thoom and Ren'tlic quickly absorbed.

344 BA - The southern human kingdoms conquered, and Forthar crowned as High King in Hyrios.

343-332 BA - Forthar carries out a series of campaigns against the northern kingdoms, beginning with his conquest of the Halflings (341 BA) and ending with his nominal conquest of Nordfell (332 BA). Nordfell was never completely pacified and remained a thorn in Forthar's side for the remainder of his reign.

331 BA - Forthar controls all 11 Human kingdoms, the Halflings, and the Thoom.

330 BA - The first invasion of the Fen valleys ends in defeat for the human forces and withdrawal. Forthar himself was not present for this campaign, being distracted by his recent marriage to the Princess Oliva Tengerion of Fosner.

329 BA - The second invasion of the Fen valleys, led by Forthar himself this time, again ends in defeat at the battle of Norlan Creek. Peace treaty signed with the Fen.

326 BA - Invasion of the Sylvan kingdom of S'pire, and excursions into the forest of Myrkilshin. No decisive battles were fought, as the nature of the terrain made progress essentially impossible for the Humans. Sea towns such as Mer d'Syl and Perimloknia were captured and held by the Humans, and the provinces of Araval and Syrgetw'mon were laid to waste, but the core of Sylvan strength remained unaffected. The southern Sylvan islands (called, paradoxically, The Lakes) were among the first Sylvan outposts to fall to the humans.

324 BA - Peace treaty signed between Sylvan and Humans, with Mer d'Syl, Araval, Perimloknia, Syrgetw'mon and The Lakes remaining in human hands.

  • Forthar never invaded Dwarven territory, having too much respect for their fighting prowess, and knowing also of the defeat and death of Balmord. However, neither did the Dwarves aid him, despite their considerable hostility to the Sylvans.

300 BA - Death of the High King Forthar. His kingdom was swiftly broken up between his heirs, leading to the formation of a northern kingdom (the Nordvar Dynasty) and a southern kingdom (the Flaidoier Dynasty). The border between them ran along the river ??. Rulers of both kingdoms called themselves High King, and there was incessant hostility, more or less active depending on the time, between the two kingdoms.

290 BA - Araval, Mer d'Syl, Perimloknia, Syrgetw'mon and The Lakes reconquered by the Sylvans, in what became known as The War of Remembrance. The Flaidoier Dynasty too preoccupied with the hostile Nordvars to be able to hold these Sylvan areas.

121 BA - The Nordvar Dynasty, still ruling in the northern Human kingdoms and ruled by the High King Stell Sargrimm Nordvar, develops ambitions of unification, aiming to defeat and exterminate the Flaidoier Dynasty and eliminate the southern High King. Mindful of past defeats at the hands of the Fen, they decide not to embark on hostilites with that race, but instead seek an offensive alliance with the Fen. In these negotiations it was the Halflings, led by the famed Jumblie Short-Toe, who acted as the principal negotiators. However, the final round of negotiations was temporarily halted when Jumblie Short-Toe was prevented from attending. The rumour has it that it was his obsession with food that prevented his attendance, but the exact details are known only to the Halfling people.

120 BA - Before negotiations could be resumed, and before any invasion of the South was attempted, the entire Western Continent was devastated by a plague, now known to be a virulent form of the Yellow Pustulance. It struck most races alike, bringing in its wake great devastation and economic dislocation. The one notable exception was the Thoom, who remained almost entirely unaffected by the disease. The reasons for this are unclear, but are most likely related to their vastly superior hygeine and the advanced state of Thoom medical knowledge. In other areas of Shan Deral poverty increased dramatically, and trade was halted almost entirely. The Yellow Pustulance appears to have arisen on the isle of Su'gor, and spread thence in trading ships to most coastal areas, but its exact provenance is yet unclear.

117 BA - Within three years the plague spreads to all corners of Shan Deral. By 115 BA it begins to die down. The years following the Yellow Pustulance were chaotic. Centralised government was greatly weakened in most of the Human kingdoms, leaving a power vacuum that religious and political groups were quick to fill. Religious sects and mystic cults abounded, banditry was ubiquitous.

103 BA - This year saw the appearance of one of the most important cults to appear during that time, the Darshak Theocracy. It arose in the foothills of the Konthless Mountains, on the border of Fosner, and due to the ruthlessness of its leaders, the fanaticism of its followers, and its organisation, it quickly established itself as a major power in the north-east.

101 BA - King Meniontur of Fosner is assassinated, and the armies of the Darshak Theocracy take over the government of Fosner.

97 BA - Invasion and subjugation of the Kingdom of Liranth by the Darshak Theocracy.

84 BA - Invasion and subjugation of the Kingdom of Brimoa by the Darshak Theocracy.

73 BA - Invasion and subjugation of the Kingdom of Sul by the Darshak Theocracy. Thus, by this date the Darshak Theocracy contolled four of the northern human kingdoms, fatally weakening the power of the Nordvar Dynasty.

68 BA - The last Nordvar High King, Memraoi Nordvar, is assassinated in his bed. It is widely believed (with good reason) that the Darshak Theocracy was responsible for this deed. Certainly, it was the triggering event for a lightning Darshak campaign against the remaining human kingdoms in the North. Nordfell and Kiramu quickly fell to the Darshak forces, as did Khorobit. Thus, in less than 40 years the Darshak Theocracy had grown to be the dominant power in Shan Deral.

67 BA - The deposed King of Khorobit (sometimes known as the Grand Imperator) disappears, in one of the greatest mysteries of that era. His fate yet remains unknown, although many theories have been discussed. Most historians believe him to have been secretly abducted and murdered by the Darshak, although rumours of magical time transferral can still be heard today. His disappearance led to the most persistent "return" myth of the historical record; to this day it is firmly believed by the majority of the citizens of Khorobit that their vanished King lies in waiting for the time of his kingdom's greatest need, when he shall reappear with flaming sword to vanquish his foes and reestablish the high Kingship under his own dominion.

52 BA - Birth of Mobius. Place of birth unknown.

2 BA - Mobius, now grown to great power, rallies the remaining four human kingdoms (Keril, Rosyaye, Ren'tlic and The Far Isles), the Sylvan, the Thoom and the Halflings. A great alliance is formed against the Darshak. The Halflings are too close to the centre of Darshak power to send large numbers of troops. The Fen'neko are too confident in their own ability to resist the Darshak and send no help. The Dwarves are far away from the Darshak, and remain aloof.

Year 1 - The Darshak Theocracy defeated in what is now called The Battle of Tears. The battle took place just outside the walls of Hyrios, in Ren'tlic. Formation of The Ascendancy. First recorded appearance of the Dark Sentinels. The Thoom and Halflings quickly submit to Mobius.

Year 5 - Dwarves conquered by Mobius.

Year 7 - Fen'neko conquered by Mobius.

Year 8 - The Sylvan War of Independence. Sylvan, alarmed by the growing power of Mobius and his evident desire to subjugate all the other races, declare war upon the Ascendancy but are soon defeated by the Dark Sentinels.

Year 233 - The Ghorak Zo appear in Shan Deral in an invading army, come, as we now know, in response to a plea for help from Dwarven mystics, who had found, in the Sword of the World Mountains, a magical portal to the Zo homworld.

Year 235 - The Zo defeated by the armies of The Ascendancy. The Human city, Mountain's Reach, is given to the Zo. Two Zo protectorates formed, one from the Fen'neko, one from the Halflings.

Year 236 - Humans, Halflings and Fen'neko rise in rebellion, now called The Uli Rebellion, in protest at the settlement of Ghorak Zo upon their ancestral lands. Called the Uli war because the rebels took the Uli flower, a flower that symbolised the world of Shan Deral, as their symbol of protest. Uli flowers are widely regarded as one of the most beautiful of all plants on Shan Deral, but were unknown on the Ghorak Zo homeworld.
