17 - Battle of Tears

Mobius had realized while he was still in Brimoa that he wouldn't be able to stop the Darshak at the Aethry river or on the vast plains of Rosyaye. Instead he harassed and lured the Darshaks south to the Gula river and Hyrios here he hoped to be able to hold and eventually defeat the Darshak armies.

The Alliance armies were desperately outnumbered right from the start. Only half of the watch forces from along the Aethry and about two thirds of the invasion forces in Khorobil had managed to join him in northern Ren'tlic.

Mobius had nearly two weeks to organize his forces for the coming battle. He made good use of that time to drastically build up the defenses around Hyrios and organize an effective battle strategy.

This would be the Battle of Tears.

Terrain:

Hyrios was then, as it is now, the largest city in Ren'tlic.

The city of Hyrios is separated from southern Rosyaye by the mighty Gula river and flanked on the west by the Ren river.

During Mobius' time Hyrios had 3 distinct districts: to the north there was the old walled city and keep, butting up against the old city walls was the much larger and newer outer walled city, and surrounding the outer walled city was the largely undefended new town. At the north end of the main bridges across the Gula river was an old Rosyaye customs fort.

The old city wall was penetrated by 5 gateways and 3 barred canals. The outer wall had 2 barred canal gates, five highway gates and 2 lesser gates. The larger and more populated bulk of the city had no surrounding walls or gates.

The surrounding rivers were bridged by one large span crossing the Ren to the west and three bridges crossing the Gula to the north. Docks were present on both the Gula and Ren rivers.

Six highways left the city in all directions.
