Introduction
No sooner had Mobius taken authority over the
armies of Keril, Ren'tlic, Rosyaye and The Far Isles than he went on the offensive
against the Darshak menace.
Mobius' advisors felt that most of the Darshak
army would be stuck in the north on mud-bogged spring roads. They advised making
use of the time they had before the northern summer to storm across Khorobil and
then turn north into Sul before the Darshaks were fully mobilized. The
plains of southern and western Khorobil were fundamentally indefensable so this
would be a quick undertaking.
Mobius ordered that the armies based in Ren'tlic
would attack into Khorobil. At the same time fleets from the Far Isles would land
armies near Vastor and Zulun. His advisors agreed that this was the correct course
of action. Most of the armies from Keril and Rosyaye would hold along the Aethry
River in the east and the Nethryn River in the west. Mobius himself would lead
his Sentinels and the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th, 7th legions(1)
out of Rosyaye and across the Aethry just downstream of the Brimwon River in eastern
Sul.
The 1st, 2nd and 7th were to head east(2)
along the Aethry to prevent the Darshaks from moving north
from Khorobil. Mobius, his Sentinels and the 4th Cavalry and 5th Foot Legions
would head north to where the road crossed the Brimwon into southeast Brimoa and
wait for his armies to finish their tasks in the south.
As Mobius moved north, lead elements of the 4th
Legion encountered a massive force of Darshaks moving south across the Brimwon.
None of Mobius' advisors had anticipated that a milder than normal winter and
a dry spring in Brimoa and Liranth would allow the Darshaks to organize for an
assault southwards so early.
The Darshak force that Mobius faced was much larger
than any he was prepared to face with the forces he had on hand. He also knew
that there was a good chance his own forces could be trapped north of the Aethry
if he wasn't careful.
Mobius decided to split his forces in two. The
4th Legion would head south east towards The Capital with the Darshak force in
pursuit. Mobius himself would lead his sentinels and the slower moving 5th Legion
back to where they had originally crossed the Aethry.
The 4th led the Darshaks half way to The Capital
and then cut southwest to meet up with Mobius at the Aethry Bridge. The commander
of the 4th sent 2 light cavalry units ahead to scout out the south side of the
bridge.
Thus began the Battle of Aethry Crossing.
