The causes of the Uli Rebellion are many and complex, and extend over a thousand years into the past. And it is in these remote ages that we begin our story.

In modern times, the protectorate of Keril is a fertile and peaceful land, bordered by the Sword of the World Mountains to the West, and extending east to the protectorate of Sul. But, before the ascent of Mobius, it was the ancient Kingdom of Keril that saw some of the most savage, bitter and bloody fighting in the entire history of Shan Deral, as Human fought Fen'Neko for control of the region north of the Aethry river. A region that has seen so many battles it is widely known as The Bone Fields, although during the times of which we speak it was called Low Norlan by The People, and Upper Keril by Humans.

This is not the place for a detailed description of these many misguided and foolish wars. Suffice it to say that, as the fighting between Human and Fen'neko surged backwards and forwards across this region, the border between the two races was at times as far south as the river Aethry, at other times as far north as the ancient province of Yamar. Over the years, the border gradually stabilised, until by the time of Mobius it was relatively stable, sitting about halfway between the river Aethry and the province of Yamar, as can be seen in the map. Nevertheless, no matter how seemingly stable the border, old hatreds ran deep and murky.

It was to protect Upper Keril that the city of Mountain's Reach was constructed in 735 BA. A grim and towering fortress city, situated in the foothills of the Sword of the World Mountains, Mountain's Reach dominated the Bone Fields, quickly becoming the linch-pin around which the Kerilians could defend the plains of northern Keril. It was the greatest fortress ever built by Humans, rivalling even the famed Dwarven fortress city of Makchatun (upon which it was modelled, in fact). Mountain's Reach was known across all of Shan Deral as a symbol of Human military prowess, with its foundations standing deep in the blood of the countless generations who had perished in the incessant Human-Fen'neko wars.

And so time passed; wars and battles, feuds and bloodshed; the Wars of Unification; the Battle of Norlan Creek. Major convulsions all.

And then came Mobius. During the struggle against the Darshak the kingdom of Keril stood side by side with Mobius; Kerilian contingents fought in the Battle of Tears and the preceding campaigns, earning themselves a name for loyalty and courage. When the Ascendancy was formed, the kingdom of Keril was turned into the protectorate of Keril, and the province swore fealty to the Emperor. Mountain's Reach remained in Kerilian hands, although subject (of course) to the Emperor's command.

And thus matters stood for hundreds of years. Peace and tranquillity were the order of the day, and the protectorate of Keril began at last to emerge from the centuries of violence into the dawn of a more civilised age.

Until the Ghorak Zo arrived.
